Vedic Astrology.

During the past issues, I explained a lot about Astrology and Vaasthu. In this issue, I wish to tell something about Jyotiṣa. (In Sanskrit, Jyotiṣa comes from “jyótis”, meaning - "light, heavenly body.” It is also spelled Jyotish, and Jyotisha in English.) It is the Ancient Indian system of Astronomy and Astrology (also known as Indian Astrology, or Hindu Astrology). The best among all these is, Vedic Astrology. Even though it has many parts, two are the most important. The first is called Samhita or Mundane Astrology. It involves predicting important events based on the analysis of the astrological dynamics in a country's horoscope, or general transit events, such as war, earth quakes, political events, financial positions, electional astrology, house and construction related matters (Vāstu Shāstra), animals, portents, and omens, etc.

The second one is called Hora.It is considered Predictive Astrology, and is based on the analysis of time, at the moment a query is made. The foundation of Jyotisha is the notion of Bandhu, of the Vedas or Scriptures, which is the connection between the microcosm and the macrocosm. The practice of Jyotisha primarily relies on the Sidereal Zodiac, which is different from the Tropical Zodiac used in Western Astrology, in that an Ayanamsa adjustment is made for the gradual precession of the Vernal Equinox. Jyotisha includes several nuanced sub-systems of interpretation and prediction, with elements not found in Hellenistic Astrology, such as its system of Lunar Mansions (Nakshatras).

Astrology remains an important facet in the lives of all human beings. However, due to its exploitation by a few people, Astrology has become a different subject. Today, it is practised and believed, mostly by Hindus, and those persons from western countries, who still have great faith in astrology. In Hindu Culture, newborns are traditionally named based on their Jyotish charts, and Jyotish concepts are pervasive in the organization of the calendar and holidays, as well as in many areas of life, such as in making decisions made about marriage, opening a new business, or moving into a new home. To some extent, Astrology even manages to retain a position among the Sciences in modern world. Now I wish to tell you about the Bhavas or the effects of the different houses.

 Bhāva – the houses.

A house is a zodiacal division according to local time and location (i.e. an effectively "moving" division of the sky from the perspective of a fixed observer, rather than a fixed portion according to the stars, as is true of the signs.) Houses are enumerated counter-clockwise from the house on the eastern horizon, passing through the "other side of the sky" and the western horizon, until  returning to the starting point.

More than one system, which aligns houses with signs, is recognized in Jyotisha. One is what Western astrologers call the Whole Sign House System, another is Sripathi, which is akin to a Porphyry House System. But Atharva Vedic Astrology, is the most accurate. The significance of the 12 houses are as follows:
  1. Lagna - Nature of Nativity, Appearance, Health, Character, and Purpose of Life.
  2. Dhana - Wealth, Family, Domestic Comforts, Early Education, and Inheritance.
  3. Parākrama - Younger Brothers and Sisters, Communication (Talking, Writing, Business Documents), Intelligence, Later Education, and Short Journeys.
  4. Suhṛda - Mother, Emotions, Education, Home, Property & Land, and Surroundings in Old Age.
  5. Suta - Children, Love, Recreation, Devotion, Speculation, Gambling, and Creativity.
  6. Ripu/Roga - Health, Maternal Aunt & Uncle, Litigation, Servants, Mental Worries, Enemies, and Foreigners.
  7. Kāma - Spouse, Business Partners,Trade, Agreements, Honor & Reputation and Death.
  8. Mrityu -Longevity, Failure, Suffering, Sexuality, Occult, Dowry, Inheritance, Imprisonment, and Torture.
  9. Bhāgya - Luck, Higher Learning, Philosophy & Religion, Mentor or Guru, Father, Prosperity, and Travel.
  10. Karma - Profession, Status, Power, Father, Mother-in-law, Government and Business.
  11. Āya - Friends, Hopes, Earnings, Club or Social Activities, Elder Brothers and Sisters, Daughters & Sons-in-law.
  12. Vyaya - Expenses, Sleep, Spirituality, Travel & Pilgrimage, Secret Enemies, Imprisonment, Hospitals, Asylums, and Liberation.
One's ascendant, or Lagna, the Rasi which is rising on the eastern horizon at the time of one's birth, is the most influential and important one. Another important impact is of the Janma Rasi, the rasi in which the moon lay, while one was born. In addition, The sage Parasara, mentioned a few special ascendants, before mentioning the results of various divisional charts and houses. His mention that houses can be counted from special Lagnas, clearly indicates that he wanted special Lagnas to be used for certain specific purposes. Some important special Lagnas are as follows.

No prediction is complete without analyzing the following things. First, the Drishti, the vision or aspect of a planet, plays a major role. The second is Argala or the intervention. The third is Arudha, or the mounted image. The fourth is Yoga, or the planetary combinations. The fifth is Shadbala, or the sixfold strength of the planets. Without analyzing these five factors, the prediction of the horoscope is incomplete. Now let me explain a little about all these aforesaid five factors.

Drishti - the aspect.

Aspect is one of the most important phenomena. It not only interlinks the planets with each other, but also plays a role as a bridge between the signs. In Jyotisha, the word Drishti is tantamount to Aspect, which means glance or sight. It is the transfer of influences to another Graha (House) or to another Rāshi (Planet), as a result of their situation, in relation to one another.
The hierarchy of aspect can be categorized into two types as;
I-a. Aspect based on Planet or Sign’s Nature.
This is the system of aspect studied in Jyotisha. This holds that certain planets or signs sight another planet or sign, depending on its nature. This can also be divided into two kinds –namely: Graha Drishti  and Rasi Drishti.
The Graha Drishti should be preferred first when analyzing the Nakshatra Dasha Chart, with respect to the Moon.
The Rāshi Drishti should be preferred when analyzing the Rasi Dasha Chart, with respect to Special Lagnas and Vargas, i.e. Divisional Charts.
I-b. Aspect based on Relative Distance.
This is the same method currently in vogue in Western Astrology. Tajik Varshaphala ( the Vedic Solar Return Chart), applies this technique to erect 14 different types of aspects, also known as Varshaphala Yogas.

II. Argala – the intervention.

The Karakas (Significators) of various houses are interlinked. The support provided by one house to another, is called Argala, and the obstruction offered to the houses, is called Virodha Argala. Grahas (planets) in 2nd, 4th, and 11th houses, cause Argalas on a given house, whereas the planets in 12th, 10th, and 3rd, cause Virodha Argalas to the 2nd, 4th and 11th, respectively.
Benefics generally give Shubha Argalas, and Malefics offer Papa Argalas. If however, a Malefic has an Argala on a house of which it is a Significator, such an Aragala can be termed as Shubha. For example Malefics in 10th house cast Papa Prgala on the 9th house, as 10th house is second from 9th. This may make the newborn, non-religious and indicate bad relations with bosses and teachers (provided there is no Virodh Argala from 8th).

III. Arudha – the mounted image.

The term Arudha Pada, is also known as just "Pada". Arudha, literally means "mount,” and refers to the IMAGE of one sign falling on another, due to the "reflection of the rays emanating from it and being reflected by its lord”. Keeping the reflection in view, the Karaka (Significator) can be taken to be the Moon. Count from a sign to its lord. Then count as many signs from the lord to arrive at the ARUDHA PADA. For example, if the Lagna Lord is in the fifth house, then count five signs from the Lagna lord to arrive at the ninth house. This ninth house becomes the Arudha Pada for the Lagna.
Exception: The Arudha Pada cannot be in the same sign, or the seventh, from it. In case this happens, then choose the tenth house there from. For example, if the Lagna Lord is in the 4th house, then the Arudha Lagna should be in the 4th from the 4th house, i.e. the 7th house. But since this is not allowed, the tenth from it, should be chosen. The tenth from the 7th house, is the 4th house, and the 4th house becomes the Arudha Lagna.
The Arudha of 1st house is also called the PADA LAGNA or the ARUDHA LAGNA. Arudha Lagna stands for "manifestation of self, in this Maya (illusory world). In this manner Arudha Pada can be computed for all the houses. They are called Dhana Pada (2nd), Bhratripada (3rd), Matri Pada (4th), Mantrapada (5th), Satrupada (6th), Dara Pada (7th), Roga Pada (8th), Bhagyapada (9th), Rajyapada (10th), Labhapada (11th) and Upapada (12th). The most ancient Atharva Vedic monk Jaimini, discussed Arudha lagna and Upapada extensively in his classical treatise.

IV. Yoga – the planetary combinations.

In Jyotish, Yoga means "yoka" or combination. Yogas are certain planetary combinations. Jyotish classics indicate hundreds of thousands of Yogas. The Chandra (lunar combinations - for general luck), The Dhana (wealth related), and Raja (power and success related), Yogas, are often studied. Nearly eight hundred and seventy six (876), astrological yogas have been mentioned in ancient Atharva Vedic texts.

Shadbala – the sixfold strength.

Shadbala means sixfold strength. Although these strengths are used in combination for finding the effect of planets on the lives of the natives, there is more use of the strengths and we get a clue of those uses from their names. These strengths need not be used only in predicting the results of the Dasa, however, they can also be used for normal interpretation of Horoscopes.
Shad Bal consists of the following strengths:
These strengths are computed for the seven Grahas from Sun to Saturn. The lunar nodes (Raaghu and Kethu) are not considered.
No one can become an astrologer by reading the texts and books alone. The blessings of the Yaksha Devathas is a must. Only then, will the words from the mouth of an astrologer, be true. The results given by him will be wonderful.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss World Contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These
are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But
the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with

Easier?

The lesson:  The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

This is a devotional   variant to the exercises on body sensations that you will find helpful if you have reservations about calling the body sensation exercises true prayer or contemplation. Repeat one of the body sensation exercises. Take some time to experience as many and as subtle sensations as you can in various parts of your body......Now make the REFLECTION: Every sensation I feel, no matter how light and subtle is the result of a bio-chemical reaction that could not exist except for God’s Almighty Power.... FEEL God’s power at work in the production of every single sensation.... Feel HIM touching you in each of those sensations that HE is producing.... Feel the touch of God in different parts of your body: rough, smooth, pleasurable, painful....The experience of God need not be something sensational or out of the ordinary, unless your devotion and Divine Love is developed. There is, no doubt, an experience of God that is different from the ordinary run of experiences that we are accustomed to: there is the deep silence that I spoke of earlier, the glowing darkness, the emptiness that brings fulfillment.

There are sudden, unaccountable flashes of Eternity or of the infinite   that comes to us when we least expect them, in the midst of our work. One needs to do so little, really, to experience God. All one needs to do is quieten   oneself, become still  and become aware of the feel of your hand. Beware of the sensations in your hand.... There you have God, living and working in you, touching you, intensely near you.... Feel HIM.... Experience HIM. Most of the devotees look upon an experience like this as far too pedestrian. Surely there is more to the experience of God than just the simple feel of the sensations of one’s right hand. This needs a long explanation to know the reality Yet, you are assured that these simple and humble exercises shall help you a lot to march towards that reality. We forget all too easily that one of the big lessons of incarnations is that God is found in the ordinary also. Do you wish to see God? Look at the fact next to you. You want to hear him? Listen to the cry of a baby, the loud laughter of a simple party, the wind rustling in the trees. Or just quieten yourself, become aware of the sensations in your body, sense HIS ALMIGHTY POWER at work in you and feel how near He is to you.

In this exercise, the wandering of the mind is not considered a distraction provided you are aware that your attention is shifting to some other object.... Once you have become aware of this shift, stay with the new object (thinking, listening, feeling....) for a while, then return to the basic object of your attention (breathing).... your skill in self-awareness may become so great that you will not only become aware of the shift of your attention on to some object, but even of the desire to shift, the impulse in you to shift on to something else. As when you want to move your hand you will first become conscious of the desire arising within you to move the hand, your consent to this desire, your carrying out of this desire, the very first stirring of your hand.... All of which activities are performed in an infinitesimal fraction of a second and so we find it impossible to distinguish one from the other until the silence and stillness within us has become almost total and our awareness has acquired razor edge sharpness. Self-awareness is a powerful means for increasing in love of God and of neighbor. The self-awareness heightens the love. The love, when it is genuine, fosters deeper self-awareness. Do not go in search of abstruse means for developing your self-awareness. Begin with humble things like the awareness of the feel of your body or awareness of the things around you and then more on to exercises like the ones which are suggested here and it won’t be long before you notice the fruits of peacefulness and love that heightened self-awareness brings with it.

Dr.Commander Selvam

Ekalavya was a little boy, born in a poor family, many many years ago. His people lived a little away from Hastinapura, the capital of the Kuru kings. They used to clean other people's dirt for a profession.

And for this reason they were shunned by society. Ekalavya and other kids of his group knew they too had to follow their parents' professions.

Their parents often told them, "You are not meant to go to school. What use is school for carrying garbage which is your only job?"

"Don't go near those people; they are high born, we are low born."

Ekalavya didn't understand.

"Why, but why?" he asked his mother. She replied "God set these limits."

"God! Why would God want nice things for them and dirty things for us? Hasn't God made all of us?" Ekalavya asked.

She sighed, "Darling I don't know, but there are bounds we cannot cross, this is God's rule."

Ekalavya became quiet. From that day the only important thing for him was to understand the meaning of "limit". You know, kids (and grown ups) are sometimes cruel. One day Ekalavya and his friends trapped a little ant and were watching it try to escape. The ant tried and tried till it found a little opening at the edge of the trap and escaped.

Other children moved to trap it again but Ekalavya stopped them shouting, "The brave ant has broken the bounds. Limits are meant to be broken. I am free, free". One day, Ekalavya saw beautiful chariots come into the forest near his village. He saw boys of his age get out of the chariot one by one. What lovely clothes they wore!

Last, an old man with snowy white hair and spotless white clothes came out looking stern and calm. The boys seemed a little scared of the old man but with one dusky handsome boy, the old man's behaviour was different, he smiled and patted this boy on the head. Ekalavya heard his father's voice, "Come away boy, there is work to do. Those are the Kuru princes, with their teacher Drona. The boy he just patted is his favourite, Arjuna. They have come to practice 'archery'. Don't go near them."

"Father, all I want is a pat from the grand old man." so saying, Eklavya ran towards the old man Drona.

By then the boys had started shooting with bows and arrows. What amazing things Arjuna did! He could shoot at a target with his eyes shut. He could shoot with his left hand as well as the right. And the teacher Drona? His arrows made fire, chased things in circles, brought rain and lightning. It was magical. Arjuna's eyes never left his teacher. It was like he wanted to absorb every bit of Drona. And you could see that Drona too was very proud of Arjuna.

The practice ended. Ekalavya went up to Drona and with folded hands said, "Great sir, please teach me".

"I don't teach the low-born," was the cold reply as Drona turned away.

"Master, your arrows don't seem to mind any limits, they bring rain and fire, they bring night and day. How then can you be bound by stupid thoughts of high and low birth?" With this Ekalavya walked away from the glaring Drona. The next day, Ekalavya carved a statue of Drona on a tree trunk with a knife. He made himself a bow and arrows. Each day he would bow before the statue, practise shooting and imagine a pat on his back from Drona.

Some months passed. The grand princes and their master came to the forest again. As Arjuna reached to take aim of a particularly difficult target, an arrow reached Arjuna's target before he could even aim. Shocked the boys and their teacher looked around. They saw Ekalavya, who went up to touch Drona's feet. "Who is your teacher?" Drona asked. Ekalavya quietly led him to the statue. Drona looked at it for some time and said, "If I am your Guru, give me my fee, my guru dakshina".

"Ask, sir", bowed Ekalavya. "I want your right thumb," replied the stone hearted Drona. Without the right thumb to support it, how can any archer ever hold a bow?As Arjuna and the other princes watched in shock, Ekalavya wordlessly cut off his right thumb and laid it at Drona's feet. Many years passed. A great war was on in Kurukshetra between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, cousins who were related. Arjuna was on the side of the Pandavas. His teacher Drona, and many of his cousins, who had been Drona's students with him, were on the other side.

After the day's battle, a sad Drona was sitting in his camp. Suddenly, like a respectful prayer, arrows fell near his feet one after another. He looked up and who do you think he saw?

Why, Ekalavya ! The young Ekalavya said, "Master I have learned to shoot without my right thumb. I have learned to shoot with my left hand, and with my feet. I have taught others and raised an army. Today I'm known as a great archer." Drona was speechless.

"Master, I set your greatness free from the limits of your own mind. I made it my teacher in the form of your statue. Your great love for Arjuna crossed the bounds of fairness when you asked for my thumb. You thought that it would finish me as an archer. But great masters always end up teaching something. By asking for my thumb, you made me learn to shoot with both hands and feet. And for this lesson, I offer my services to you in this war."

Drona's eyes filled with tears. He answered, "Yes, it is true, bounds and limits are in the mind. Real courage is fighting against wrong limits and respecting the correct ones. Ekalavya, you have taught me this."

Dr.Commander Selvam

There are four stages in vairagya: (1) Yatamanam. This is an attempt not to allow the mind to run into sensual grooves. (2) Vyatirekam. In this stage some objects are attracting you and you are endeavoring to cut off the attachment and attraction. Slowly vairagya develops for these objects also. Then the vairagya matures. When some objects tempt and delude you, you should ruthlessly avoid them. You will have to develop vairagya for these tempting objects and it must also mature. In this stage you are conscious of your degree of vairagya towards different objects. (3) Ekendriyam. The indriyas stand still and subdued, but the mind has either raga or dwesha for objects. Mind is, in other words, the only indriya that functions independently. (4) Vasikaran. In this highest stage of vairagya, the objects no longer tempt you. They cause no attraction. The indriyas are perfectly quiet. Mind also is free from likes and dislikes (raga and dwesha). Then you get supremacy or independence. Now you are conscious of your supremacy. Without vairagya no spiritual progress is possible.

Sometimes the mind gets disgusted with one kind of sadhana. It wants some other kind of sadhana. It rebels against monotony. The aspirant should know how to coax the mind on such occasions and to extract work from it by a little relaxation of mind. The cessation of sadhana is a grave blunder. Spiritual practices should never be given up under any circumstances. Evil thoughts will be waiting to enter the gates of the mental factory. If the student of yoga stops his sadhana, his mind will become the devil's workshop. Do not expect anything. Be sincere and regular in your daily meditation, routine and tapas. Do not deviate from the path you have chosen. The fruit will come by itself. Your efforts will be surely crowned with roaring success. It takes a long time to purify the mind and get one-pointedness. Be cool and patient my child.

But work incessantly without attachment, without any identification. Then alone you can feel that you are a different being. Karma Yoga elevates a man to sublime, magnanimous heights, when done in the right spirit, with the right mental attitude or bhav. One should patiently work. That is all. No meditation or samadhi is ever possible without a preliminary training in nishkamya karma yoga. To work without attachment is doubtless a difficult task. It is an uphill work. But it becomes a very easy job and pleasant too to a man of patience and determination. You will have to do it at any cost if you want final beatitude and immortality. Everyone of you will have to do it, though not now, at least after taking five hundred births. There is no other alternative but to do so. But the question is: Why not now? Why not in this very birth itself? Why not cut short the cycle of births and deaths and enjoy the bliss of the self right now, this very second? Therein lies real wisdom.

Have a strong determination and a strong will. Never think of returning home after taking up the nivritti marga. Look before you leap. Have courage, fixity of mind and a definite purpose in life. Be not wavering. Are you ready to give up all possessions, including body and life? Then alone come to me. Then alone take to nivritti marga and embrace sannyasa. Think twice before you come to definite conclusions. This is not a rosy path as you imagine. It is full of thorns. It is beset with countless difficulties and hardships. Be humble, patient and persevering. Never care for siddhis or quick awakening of the kundalini. I shall serve you. I shall help you. I shall take care of you. Be not troubled. Be not anxious. I am your servant always. Be noble-minded. Mere emotional bubbling will not help you much. Some young men have returned to their homes. Difficulties are many in this path. But it can make you King of kings, and Emperor of emperors.

Are you not ashamed to repeat the same old process of eating, drinking and sleeping day in and day out? You are proud of your titles and knowledge. Have you improved your life even a bit? What have you learnt from the recent Bihar and Quito earthquakes! Are you attempting to reach that imperishable seat, wherein all desires and trishnas are completely eradicated? Are you endeavoring, in however small a measure it may be, to attain the highest goal of life, atmic realization, which gives immortality, bliss and peace? You are not crawling now. You have learnt to stand up and walk. You can think, reason out, judge, infer and ratiocinate. Will you not utilize this precious life and all your various faculties in meditation and self-realization? Can you give me a definite word of promise to the effect? Speak to me the truth now. Climb up the ladder of yoga. Drink the nectar of immortality.

A dispassionate, man has a different mind altogether. He has a different experience altogether. He is a past master in the art or science of separating himself from the impermanent, perishable objects of the world. He has absolutely no attraction for them. He constantly dwells on the Eternal or the Absolute. He identifies himself every moment of his life with the witnessing consciousness that is present in pleasure and in pain, in joy and in sorrow, in censure and in praise, in honour and in dishonour, in all states of life. He stands adamantine as a peak amid a turbulent storm, as a spectator of this wonderful world show. He is not a bit affected by these pleasant and painful experiences.. He learns several valuable lessons from them. He has, in other words, no attraction for pleasant objects and repulsion for painful ones. Nor is he afraid of pain. He knows quite well that pain helps a lot in his spiritual progress and evolution, in his long journey towards the Goal. He stands convinced that pain is the best teacher in the world.

Dear Prabhu! There is a dull spiritual awakening in you and a dull type of vairagya. You will have to develop both. Dull vairagya or mere bubbling emotions will not help you much to stick to the path of renunciation. For some time leave the house and remain in a secluded place for a week or two. Enquire. Cogitate. Investigate. Do self-analysis and find out if you have any moha, attachment to your family members. Find out if your mind runs after sensual pleasures. Be sure whether you will be able to leave the sensual objects, relatives and all sorts of comforts and conveniences. If you can completely disconnect yourself from the world, then alone come to me. I will make you a yogi of yogis in a very short time. There are many who have advanced in the spiritual path considerably in course of one or two years. You can also do that. Implicit obedience and faithful carrying out of instructions of the spiritual preceptor to the very letter is what is expected of you; that is the secret of success in the spiritual path.
