Meditation Hymn of Dakshina Kali

Om. Fierce of face, she is dark, with flowing hair and four-armed.
Dakshina Kalika divine, adorned with a garland of heads.
In Her lotus hands on the left, a severed head and a sword.
She bestows sanctuary and blessings with her right hands.
The color of the monsoon clouds, and clothed by the sky,
the garland of heads around her neck, tinges her with blood.
Fear-inspiring, with a pair of unborns as her earrings.
Her face is ferocious , her high breasts full in affection.
Girdled with a skirt of severed arms, she smiles.
A stream of blood flows from the corner of her lips.
Terrifying of voice, turbulent, dwelling in cremation grounds
With fearsome teeth, her three eyes reddened like the early sun.
Her unbraided locks covering her left side,
she is installed on the heart of corpse-like Siva.
Jackals howl around her, filling the four directions.
She is in reverse congress with Mahakaal(Time) .
With a blissful face, she is always smiling.
Meditate on kali, who grants all needs and desires.

Dakhshina Kali Mantra

This mantra is depicted in the hymn to kAli named ‘dakhshinA kAli stotram', which is also called the ‘karpurAdi stotram' stemming from its first word ‘karpUr' which literally means camphor. The word ‘dakhshinA' in this context means ‘south' as She is traditionally seen as facing south. One meaning of the word ‘dakhshinA' is ‘a fee paid to a priest', inappropriately alluded to by some in this context. The base word, ‘dakhshin' also means right (as opposed to left), like referring to the right hand. The root ‘dakhsha'means ‘skilled' or ‘ expert'. This is in semblance with the Latin ‘dexter' for right- handed, with the same root giving ‘dexterous' and ‘dexterity'. (The left is ‘sinister').

One puja text explains that the departing souls who are heading south towards ‘hell' are rescued by the goddess, who is facing in the same direction. The Southern transit of the sun is also connected to the ‘night of the gods', so She may be said to be facing the ‘night'.

‘dakhsha' is also the name of the father of the Goddess in another form as ‘satI'. And in there is the story of the death of Sati because her father did not invite her consort shiva to his great fire-ceremony. The gods ended shiva's ensuing dance of destruction by slicing the body of satI into fifty-one parts. The sites at which her body fell gave rise to the 51 ‘shakti-pithas' all over the Indian sub-continent.

The dakhshinA kAli mantra is described in the first six verses of the karpurAdi stotram in terms of its individual parts and letters. The mantra consists of 22 syllables. In Sanskrit, the syllable is the ‘akhshara'. The word could mean letter (vowel or consonant) but also means ‘that which is not dissipated'. The root ‘khsara' means ‘that which is destructible'. So, Brahman, ‘the ultimate reality' is expressed in the ‘akhshara'. The Bhagabat Gita thus refers to ‘akhshara Brahman'.

(aum) krim krim krim, hum hum, hrim hrim,
dakhshinA kAlikay,
krim krim krim, hum hum, hrim hrim, swaha.

The mantra is preceded by ‘om' or ‘aum'. It consists of three ‘bija' or seeds, krim, hum and hrim, and the name ‘dakhshinA kAlike' and ‘swaha' signifying offering. The Sanskrit script shows the first seven terms of the mantra preceded by the ‘Aum' on the first line. The ‘dakh-shi-nA-kA-lI-ke' (six syllables) on the second line. The last line shows the last nine syllables ending in ‘swA-hA'. The end sound of the seeds are between ‘m' and ‘ng' and are nasalized; krIm ~ krIng, hUm ~ hUng, hrIm ~ hrIng.

According to Some Puranas, he was born out of the right side of Vishnu resembling Siva exactly and given as a son to the sage Salankayana. Some purnas mention him as the son of the sage Silada who got him by the grace of Shiva.

It was Nandi who cursed Ravana (the demon King of Lanka) that his kingdom would be burnt by a monkey. And later Hanuman burnt Lanka when he went in search of Sita, who was kept prisoner by Ravana in Ashoka Vatika. In one puranic story, it is stated that once Siva and Parvathi were playing a game of dice. For any game there has to be an umpire, who has to declare the winner. Siva and Parvathi agreed to have Nandi (the divine bull) as the umpire. Nandi is a favorite of Siva, as he is Siva's vehicle. Although Siva lost the game, Nandi declared him the winner. It is stated that Parvathi was indignant over Nandi’s partiality for Siva and cursed him that he should die from an incurable disease. Thereupon Nandi fell at the feet of Parvathi and pleaded for forgiveness. "Mother forgive me. Should I not show at least this amount of gratitude to one who is my master? Is it not humiliating for me to declare that my master has lost the game? To uphold his honor I no doubt uttered a lie. But am I to be punished with such severity for so small an offence?" Nandi prayed for forgiveness in this manner. Parvathi forgave Nandi and taught him the means to atone for his lapse. She told him. "The Chaturdasi day in the month of Bhadrapada is the day when my son's birthday is celebrated. On that day you have to offer to my son what pleases you most (green grass)". This means that one atones for one's sins when one offers to the Lord what is most pleasing and enjoyable to him. For Nandi the most enjoyable and relishing food is green grass. As directed by Parvathi Nandi worshipped Ganapathi by offering green grass. Nandi was then relieved of his dreaded disease. His health improved and by the grace of Parvathi he was redeemed.

When the positive forces, the devas, and the negative forces, the asuras, joined together on a rare occasion to churn the ocean with a mountain to obtain the nectar of immortality they utilized Vasuki, the serpent, as the rope. The devas pulled from one end and the asuras from the other. Vasuki was upset during the process of this churning, and vomited up a poison which became human karma. This "poison" was so dangerous that none of the devas or asuras wanted to go near it. It was extremely sticky and coming into contact with this poison, i.e, human karma, would drag the divinity down to the realms of human suffering and ego. As everyone else ran away, Lord Siva, followed by Nandi, came forward to help as he was the only one who could counteract this deadly poison. Siva took the poison into his hand and drank it. Nandi saw some of the poison spill out of Siva's mouth and immediately drank if off the ground. The devas and asuras watching were shocked and wondered aloud what would happen to Nandi. Lord Siva calmed their fears saying, "Nandi has surrendered into me. So he has all my powers and my protection. That day is known as “Pradosham”. If we pray Lord Siva and Nandhi on this day, is sure to bless us with all the things we need inour routinelife.

".A primary god: Nandi as a separate god can be traced back to Indus Valley Civilization, where dairy farming was the most important occupations, thus explaining the appearance of various artifacts indicating a deity much like Lord Siva. This deity also called as Pasupati is believed to have been worshipped as the keeper of herds. Some purans describe Nandi or Nandikeshvara as bull faced human body and that resembles Siva, but with four hands, two hands holding the Parasu (the axe) and Mruga (the antelope) and the other two hands joined together in the Anjali(obeisance). Carrier of Siva: The bull Nandi is Shiva's primary vehicle and is the principal gana (follower) of Shiva. Gate keeper of Siva's place: The close association of Siva and Nandi explains the presence of a statue of Nandi at the gate of many temples dedicated to Siva. It also explains why the word "nandi" in the Telugu and Tamil languages is used as a metaphor for a person blocking the way. In Sanskrit, a bull is called "vrishbha", which has another connotation - that of righteousness or Dharma. It is important to seek the blessings of Nandi before proceeding to worship Lord Siva. Chief in Siva's army: Some Puranas mention that Nandi lead the Siva Ganas, Siva's attendants. A Guru of Saivism: In addition to being his mount, Nandi is Shiva's foremost disciple. In the Natha/Siddhar tradition, Nandi is the one of the primal gurus. He was the guru to Siddhar Thirumulanathar, Patanjalinathar and others.

You can, by mere willing alone, travel to any place you like with the astral body and there materialize by drawing the necessary elements either from Ahankara or the universal storehouse, the ocean of Tanmatras. The process is very, very simple to occultists and Yogis who know the rationale, the detailed technique of the various operations. Thought reading and thought-transference too can be quite easily performed by those who can function with the astral body. Concentrated mental rays can penetrate opaque walls, just as X-rays pass through the opaque body. This is one of the Siddhis (mystical perfections). Siddhis are not the goal of life. Do not entangle yourself in these Siddhis which mar your further spiritual progress. Shun them entirely. Continue your Sadhana and stop not till you reach the goal.

A disciplined intellect that can carefully differentiate the happiness derived from concentration and that of sensual objects will naturally run daily to enjoy this kind of new happiness derived from concentration. Such a mind will loathe at sensual pleasures. There will be extreme detesting abhorrence and positive aversion to objects. It is but natural. Because this kind of happiness is more lasting, sustained, self-contained and real as it emanates from the Atma (spirit soul). You can distinctly feel that the mind is moving, that it is leaving its seat in the heart, and that it is trying to go to its Yatha Sthana (original seat). You know that it has left its old groove and is now passing on a new avenue. As a result of meditation, new channels are formed in the brain, new thought-currents are generated, new brain cells are formed. There is a transformed psychology altogether. You have got a new brain, a new heart, new feelings, new sentiments, new emotions and new sensations.

Anahata sounds are the mystic sounds heard by the Yogi at the beginning stage of his meditation. This subject is termed Nada-Anusadhana, an enquiry into the mystic sounds. This is a sign of purification of the Nadis due to the practice of Pranayama. The sounds can also be heard after the uttering of the Ajapa Gayatri mantra, "Hamsah Soham', one hundred thousand times. The sounds are heard through the right ear with or without closing the ears. The sounds are distinct when heard through closed ears. The ears can be closed by introducing the thumbs in the ear through the process of Yoni-Mudra. Sit in Padma or Siddha Asana. Close the ears with right and left thumb and hear the sounds very attentively. Occasionally you can hear the sounds through the left ear also. Practice to hear through the right ear only. Why you hear through the right ear only or hear distinctly through the right ear is because of the influence of the solar Nadi, Pingla. The anahata sound is also called omkara Dhvani. It is due to the vibration of prana in the heart.
